A spiral galaxy viewed from the side so that the disk containing the spiral arms appears to be a thin line of stars and dust crossing and extending beyond the bulge. Stars in the halo also may be visible. The spiral arm structure is not visible when a spiral galaxy is viewed “edge-on.”
