A branch of the North Atlantic Current that curves north near Iceland, where a minor part of it splits to flow north along the west coast of Iceland and the major part curves to the west and joins the southward flowing East Greenland Current. Both branches ultimately rejoin the North Atlantic Current. The transport of this current has been estimated ar about 8-11 Sv.

A broad zone up to 4°–5° latitude wide consisting of several cores or fronts interspersed by zones of relatively homogeneous waters. The STFZ is thought to be a more accurate desciption of what was formerly thought to be single front called the Subtropical Front, with the STFZ boundaries being the North Subtropical Front (NSTF) and the South Subtropical Front (SSTF).
